Blue Amazon – Contempt Of Soul EP [We Are Here Music]

At first flush, the 5 tracker EP from Mexican imprint We Are Here Music might sound like a regular dance floor pack, but sit down and get comfortable, as – “Cluster Funk”, the first track of the EP draws you in with its driving bass line and squally interiors. There’s nothing understated about this track, and an already established member of the dance brigade, Blue Amazon does well to solicit such a weapon, and show out varied musicality, in a career that spans a couple of decades at the least. Lee puts in a rolling tempo and swagger that will satisfy even the zombie kind, to have a work out and all is well in dancedom.
Flip over to Side B with – “No Return” happens to be low slung sleazy. Not far away from its predecessor, the track goes chugging in much the same way, but has twists and turns, that will remind you of the previous tune, yet will get you making shapes very different, as its oversized funk bass, throttles you in to a fine sweat. The clattering percussion and orderly soft synth palette is curiously cool. The center line drives the track forward with ease and much muzzled gumption.
Next up – “Reflex 97”, conjures up warm fuzzy fuel for the floor. The bone dry snares and hi hats jostle with a deliriously hypnotic, descending bass line. The unmoored break down touches down that much, only to lift you to reverberating bursts of acidic fizz, that have been sprinkled generously over the tune. The UK Dj/Producer singes this tune with vocalism that lends a much needed respite to the otherwise marching madness of the pack.
The music continues to stun with the remake of – “We Are Here” brought to you by way of the Sebastian Markiewicz Remix. The Manchester musician clouds the track with naked rhythm music. Muffled crackle, and make shift percussion creeps in with a mean bass thud and random precocious electronic pulses.
The finisher – “No Return” gets a rework by one of my favorite producers of the dance scene; Ian Dillon tackles the original with straightened strength and reins in the work, with an open face of punctuated bass stabs nestled against a naughty pulsing melodic line and peek-a-boo vocals. The rise is buoyant and this is that one track meant for late night shenanigans, its surprisingly Psychedelic under belly and unyielding exuberance keeps you hooked.
